Smooth Energy operates primarily as an independent commissioning agency. We strive to offer complete building commissioning services for buildings of all uses and sizes with competitive pricing.
Remaining independent from design and construction teams ensures that the building systems will be verified by a neutral and unbiased party. We feel that this basic premise of commissioning helps to provide an independent method of verification that each building’s systems are working properly and in accordance with the owner’s project requirements.

Smooth Energy has been a member of the United States Green Building Council, the Building Commissioning Association and the AABC Commissioning Group since 2007. We have certified commissioning professionals, energy management professionals, and building envelope specialists from the Association of Energy Engineers, the AABC Commissioning Group, and the University of Wisconsin. Smooth Energy is a Woman Owned Small Business registered in the State of Illinois and meets all Federal requirements for WBE status. The company was founded in 2006 by Joy Papworth Townsend to provide commissioning and energy related consulting and services to commercial, residential, and government clients.
